Meet the New Staff Member Kelsey

Kelsey was an intern is this past semester and then got hired on.
Here is some more information about her...
I am from Syracuse, NY and went to a state school for college, studying therapeutic recreation. I enjoy being outdoors and doing activities like hiking, biking, climbing and walking. I absolutely love animals. I like to try new things and challenge myself. I have always loved working with people, which is why I chose my major of therapeutic recreation. Meet Intern Julia

My name is Julia Scherting and I am from Bellingham, WA (about 2 hours north of Seattle). I attend Western Washington University which is in the same town. Growing up in Bellingham has been a great experience because there are numerous outdoor activities to become involved with in this area. Some of my interests include snowboarding, hiking, kayaking, running, swimming, volleyball and soccer. When I discovered the Therapeutic Recreation program at WWU I became very excited about a future career in this field. My passion is to create environments and opportunities for people of all abilities to increase their overall quality of life through leisure and recreation. I am looking forward to completing my internship and meeting some great people at KADEP and also experiencing Colorado!

Meet Intern Lindsay

I come from Ashville, North Carolina. I am a senior at Western Carolina University located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In my spare time I enjoy rock climbing, running, hiking, art and going to concerts. I'm really excited to experience Denver and am looking forward to working with the staff and clients at KADEP.

Meet Intern Joan

Hometown: Birmingham, Alabama
Current City: Belmont, North Carolina
College: Western Carolina University

I am very close with my family. I have 2 younger brothers, one is at Virginia Tech and the other just graduated high school.
I am quite adventurous. I love hiking, camping, rafting, sea kayaking, snowboarding, skiing, wakeboarding, and playing volleyball. I became interested in Recreational Therapy by working at Camp Grier. My passion grew for this profession when I started clinical hours at a nursing home. My spirituality is very important to me and I am excited to see where God leads me next within this profession.

Meet Intern Billy

From a far off place in a small pillage named Camden; in the land of Michigan lived a young boy named Billy. Son of a carpenter and mother who served as a nurse in a nearby city.  Throughout high school Billy followed in his fathers footsteps learning the trade of carpentry. While Billy was growing up on a small lake in Michigan he became very fond of the water, sports such as football and basketball, and exploring the land with the neighborhood boys. When it was time to leave Michigan Billy attended the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio. Studying the field of Recreational Therapy. During his time at the University of Toledo Billy grew fond of music, learning both guitar and piano, and attending as many concerts as possible. After a quick four years Billy’s time at the University of Toledo had passed and it was time for a new adventure in order to complete his studies and entrench himself into the field of Recreational Therapy. Billy then graciously accepted an internship at the Rocky Mountain MS Center in the land of Colorado with a story left unwritten....

The End

-Thanks for letting me join in on all the fun!

Billy

Paver Donation

During Specials Week, KADEP had the ribbon cutting for the new Paver Sidewalk. KADEP staff and clients would like to thank all the people who donated to make this sidewalk possible. Borgert Products Inc. donated 625 pavers to the sidewalk project. Borgert Products has been a very valuable supporter of our program and the Rocky Mountain MS Center. There are an additional 54 engraved bricks distributed throughout the sidewalk from a charity donation program where each paver raised $250 for the Rocky Mountain MS Center. The remaining sidewalk cost was under $200 and the work was completed by two of KADEPs' staff and a group of clients in the Volunteerism Group last fall.

Again thank you to everyone who made this project possible. The Paver Sidewalk now is an accessible pathway around the pond and up to picnic tables.

Thank You to the Silverthrone Recreation Center for the Locker Donation!

KADEP would like to say a big thank you to the Silverthorne Recreation Center for our new lockers! Also, thank you to Liz, Paul, Scott and the pool staff for all the help loading them up. The lockers will be a welcomed addition to the KADEP building.

Planting Seeds for the Community Garden

During Specials Week. We started planting seeds for the new Vista Grande Farm!
The new farm is an organic vegetable and herb garden. RMMSC has contracted with experienced organic gardener Debbie Dalrymple, owner of Farm Yard CSA, to bring this important project to life. Fresh produce from the garden will supplement the diets of KADEP clients and will be used in KADEP cooking classes. Harvests also will be sold at a client-run farm stand as part of KADEP’s social enterprise initiative. Some produce may be sold to The Gathering Place shelter for women and children, pending current discussions.

Beth and Debra Farewell

KADEP said farewell and congrats to two staff members. Beth took a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist position at Aurora Medical Center in the behavioral psych unit. Debra took a Social Work position at Mental Health Center of Denver's Recovery Center.

Beth was at KADEP for 3 and a half years. During that time she was the hydro coordinator, volunteer coordinator, and RTD coordinator. Beth also was the all-knowledgeable, go-to, art specialist!  Her talents will be missed but we know she will pass along her skills to others.

Debra was at KADEP for a year. She was the intake and social services coordinator. Debra was always around to lend support and comfort through tough times to clients and staff. She will take her warm and loving heart to her new position.

Thank you both for everything!
